Summative Evaluation Examples: Small and Large Scale Projects, Formal Writing Pieces, Reading Selection Studies
Strands:
The ELA program in Saskatchewan is comprised of various strands that are used to provide students with a well-rounded experience with selections from various genres of literature to gain an understanding and appreciation of literature. Students will also use aspects of these strands in their own composition projects.
The strands of Saskatchewan English Language Arts are:
Comprehend & Respond – Read for understanding selections of literature and respond with well thought out responses to questions for further understanding.
Compose & Create – Use provided criteria to create pieces of unique composition that show a deeper understanding of pieces of literature.
Assess & Reflect – Use teacher, peer, and self-evaluation to improve a students’ ability to comprehend, enjoy and create pieces of literature.
These strands will intersect with formative and summative evaluation pieces possibly being evaluated using multiple outcomes from any of the three strands.

Other types of assignments and evaluations may be used throughout the year to help reinforce retention of concepts or objectives. Students will be advised well in advance of assessments they are unfamiliar with and we will spend time understanding what is being asked.
